LOLOMA FOUNDATION
MEDICAL/DENTAL MISSIONS
2012
TAVEUNI HOSPITAL, TAVEUNI ISLAND---JANUARY 14-22ND
This mission will consist of a team of surgeons, general practice physicians of various disciplines, a cataract surgeon and we hope an optometric team
The hospital is a fully functioning, electrified (daylight hours only) 20 bed inpatient hospital with two resident physicians who live on site. There are childrens, mens, womens and obstetrics wards on site with resident nurses. A very nice operating theater is on site together with a labor and delivery room. There is also a pharmacist who often has a full stock of medications.
The team will have affordable housing in the nearby community, at resorts and rental homes. Details on the costing will follow. I am hopeful of keeping it in the range of $3000.00 per person, inclusive of air, local daily transport, accommodation and meals.
Taveuni Island is part of the Northern Lau group and offers many stellar activities to fill your leisure allocation. There is great diving and snorkeling, hiking on the Lavena Coastal trail and trekking up to the Bouma Waterfalls. The island is known as “The Garden Island” and sports a rural population of 13,000 Fijians. Indo-Fijians, part-europeans, chinese and indigenous Fijians all peacefully co-exist in this verdant, rural paradise. NAVUTU STARS RESORT, YAGETA ISLAND, YASAWAS ---JANUARY 21-29th
For the 4th year, our team will be returning to Freddie and Madda’s Italian-Fijian resort to tend to the needs of the villagers from the adjacent Yasawan islands of Matacawalevu, Nanuya, Nacula, Naviti and, of course, Yageta. The resort will be closed to guests during our stay so many of our clinics will be held on the resort grounds. Additionally, our team will travel to these surrounding villages to offer basic care to those who cannot come to the clinics. This team will consist of an oral surgeon, three dentists and their respective assistants. Dental clinics will be offered daily at the resort “Dental clinic”. We will also be bringing a team of specialists to tend to the medical needs of the people. As before, the accommodation has been generously donated. Participants will cover the cost of the meals they consume. The daily cost varies but usually is not in excess of $80.00 per person for three meals. And, you will also be responsible for all those great Mojitos that go down waaay too easily! Air and Yasawa Flyer costs will total around $1500.00. You can check out the resort at http://www.navutustarsfiji.com/
TAVEUNI HOSPITAL, TAVEUNI ISLAND
MID-MARCH, 2012—DATES TBD IN CONJUNCTION WITH UCLA SPRING BREAK
This mission will be another trek back to Taveuni Hospital with a team of dentists from UCLA and a team of specialists and surgeons. Same format as with the original Taveuni Hospital mission.
The team will have affordable housing in the nearby community, at resorts and rental homes. Details on the costing will follow. I am hopeful of keeping it in the range of $3000.00 per person, inclusive of air, local daily transport, accommodation and meals.
Please contact me at Lkwasny@Lolomafoundation.org if you are interested in participating in either of these missions. We need to complete our list of attendees so we know how to solicit for those spaces and specialties that we haven’t filled. We are looking forward to a very productive year serving the basic medical needs of rural Fijians. Come join us! For those of you who haven’t been on our trips, please visit our web page at http://www.lolomafoundation.org/ to learn more about our last trip. We work hard, always allowing time to take in the physical beauty and culture of this amazing country.
Vinaka!
